Portugal’s forward and legend Cristiano Ronaldo is considered the top goal scorer of all time. The former Manchester United icon Ronaldo has continued his insane scoring run with a goal for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and now has 819 goals. Under the goals recognized by FIFA, no other player has scored more than the Portuguese superstar, who has inked his name at the top of the all-time top scorer’s list. Over the years, Ronaldo has gradually moved up the scoring charts in recent years, and he has now overtaken Austria-Czech icon Josef Bican.
Ronaldo’s goal now stands at an incredible 819 goals following his most recent strike against Ghana at the World Cup. His goal at the penalty spot made him the only player to score at five separate World Cups. If you want to know about Can Switzerland Survive The Portuguese, click here.
One less than Messi
On the “Messi-Ronaldo debate,” Cristiano took an early lead when he scored in their opening match against Ghana. Becoming the first player to ever score in five different editions of the World Cup, Cristiano had scored his 8th World Cup goal, momentarily putting him one goal ahead of Lionel Messi. The same night he caught up with his idol Maradona, he also matched Ronaldo’s tally scoring against Mexico. He overtook Ronaldo with his ninth overall World Cup goal, going past Cristiano’s eight and one more than Argentine legend Diego Maradona.

On the other hand, Ronaldo has since struggled to find the back of the net after scoring in their opener against Ghana. Despite getting multiple chances against Uruguay, Ronaldo’s closest to getting a goal was a claim on a Bruno Fernandes cross that went in. This claim, however, was ruled out after review, and the goal was awarded to Fernandez. The Portuguese legend had another chance to add to his tally when they played South Korea; however, his efforts were rendered fruitless. South Korea mounted an early comeback when Kim Young-Gwon reacted quickest to a mistake from Ronaldo, who again failed to get a goal.
The Mbappe factor
Kylian Mbappe, playing in his second World Cup, has already won the trophy. Leading all goal scorers at the Qatar World Cup with five goals, Mbappe is giving yet another exceptional performance on the stage. In their round-of-16 matchup against Poland, Kylian Mbappe assisted Olivier Giroud’s goal before netting two of his own. He scored his 8th and 9th World Cup goals, tied Lionel Messi, and passed Ronaldo and Maradona at 23 years. In what could be the last World Cup appearances for both Ronaldo and Messi, their performances will be a significant factor in the Ronaldo-Messi debate.
